What is Personal Branding?

When it comes to marketing yourself, personal branding is critical. Personal branding is the practice of marketing people and their careers as brands. Primarily, people who are personal branding are marketing themselves as the product.

People who are personal branding are usually trying to gain sponsors, leverage affiliate links, and sell their merchandise as a way to monetize.

How Should I Start With Personal Branding?

The best way to start is to begin using social media. Millions of people use social media on a consistent, daily basis. Knowing how many people are using social media, you can start networking using various social platforms as a tool to expand your reach.

Creating a personal brand should not be exclusive to social media, but it should be your primary focus. Social media allows you to reach a lot more people than you can in your day-to-day life.



You should also make an effort to attend networking events to meet as many people in your personal life too. Create business cards and have links to your social media on there to expand your reach.

Steps to Grow Your Personal Brand Using Social Media:

1. Get on All Platforms

The first thing you should do if you have not already is creating a social media account on all platforms. Since you are personal branding, you will want to prioritize the most significant social network platforms.

I recommend having an account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube primarily. These are the biggest social media platforms and will give you the most reach.

For Facebook, make sure to create a page after creating your account. If you already have an account, you do not need to create another. Create a page.

After you have created a Facebook page for yourself, head over to Instagram, and link your business page with your account. I highly suggest creating a business page for Instagram because you will have analytics that will be valuable when you begin growing your personal brand.

2. Optimize Your Accounts

I have created an article for optimizing a Twitter account already, but you will want to optimize all your accounts. Make sure to fill out all the information on the accounts, including location, bio, profile picture, cover photos, etc.

3. Post Relevant Content Related to Your Niche

The most significant factor in getting a lot of followers on your social media is to post high-quality content consistently. You will want to create your content to be specific to your niche to have the best results for attracting followers.

For example, if you are a video gamer, you will want to post a lot of your gaming highlights on your page. This is the content that your followers will want to see, and it will attract more followers than anything else you do.

You will also want to be posting consistently on all platforms at high-traffic times. The best way to do this is to use an app like Crowdfire to schedule your posts in advance. By doing this, you will have a consistent stream of posts on your social accounts.

Successful personal branding takes a lot of consistency. Do not be discouraged if the results do not come right away, as the growth will be exponential.

4. Use Hashtags and Relevant Keywords to Expand Reach

Now that your accounts are created optimized, and you have consistent content being scheduled on your social platforms, it is time to expand your reach using relevant keywords and hashtags.

Hashtags

Hashtags enable you to connect with more users in a relevant niche. If your niche is food, you can connect with more users on your posts by using a hashtag like #food. On Instagram, if you are not using hashtags, you are missing out on a lot of free impressions on your content.

If you do not know what hashtags to use, you can use a service like RiteTag to optimize your Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook posts. Hashtags are an important factor in your overall content strategy, as they will be what helps drive traffic.

Keywords

Keywords are a lot like hashtags, but they are more critical when you try to start a blog. When starting a blog, you must write relevant content within your niche and also optimize the posts with keywords. The keywords will allow Google to crawl your page and show up in search results.

5. Engage with Other Users DAILY

The best way to continue to grow your personal brand is to engage with other users daily. In my article on Social Media Strategy, I go a little in depth with this. Basically, by engaging with other users content, you give them a reason to check out your profile and engage with your content.

Also, by engaging, you are putting another link to your profile. Since other users are getting impressions on their content, you are now getting impressions on your profile through engaging. On Instagram, it is easy to do this by searching for hashtags and other content.

Another great thing to do is to reach out to other influencers within your niche and ask to collaborate with them. By collaborating, you can get some of their followers interested in your account.

6. Create a Blog

Blogging is a very effective way of growing your personal brand. Leveraging your writing ability to create blog posts is one of the most efficient ways to get high-quality and engaging followers.

You will build a strong personal brand if you are able to successfully identify a target audience online and send the traffic to your social media platforms.

Learn to write SEO optimized articles, hire a graphic designer to help include optimized images in your posts, and start building your online presence.

The best way to do this is to create a personal website with your first and last name as the domain name if it is available. If it isn’t available, try to use different variations until you get a domain that is suitable. Make sure to only post content that you are passionate about, or you will have a hard time building authenticity.

Spend some time doing this, and most importantly, have fun with it! 

7. Invest in Paid Promotion and Advertisements

The last thing you should be doing is buying paid promotion and advertisements to expand your reach further. With a little bit of money, you can reach thousands of more people. I would suggest reaching out to accounts within your niche that have a lot of followers and see if they offer paid promotion.

You can also invest in Facebook and Instagram ads if you want more targeted followers, but this will take a lot of money to see any results.
